In actual fact, papercraft can be really cool and loads of fun, especially when you build one of the geeky printable templates we have for you in this post. Can’t afford a Mac? All of the papercraft templates below, which may at first appear to be quite elaborate, are very easy to build. All you will need is a printer, a craft knife (I used scissors and a steak knife for my R2-D2, worked great) and maybe some glue (to reinforce the interlocking tabs), and you are good to go. Hi Geoff, nice results! I've been using the paper model add-on myself and had some mixed results. Baking a high res model is possible, but a lot of the detail is lost in printing. I ended up just painting the end result with acrylics.
Adding my own findings to your excelent article:
Paper of 180g/m2 gives nice results.
If the layout is not well packed, you can export as svg and edit it in inkscape (free and open source).
Paper has a grain, if you want to have a long fold, it should be vertical on the page. If you want to curve or roll a piece (a gun barrel on a tank for example) it should be laid out from left to right on the paper.
Colors on the final print are not the same as on screen. Increasing contrast and color saturation can help give a better final result.
